Fix the max mess.

About a month ago, walking the socially-distanced aisles of the supermarket, I thought to myself, again, that I hope we never get used to this mask-wearing world we’re living in, that it doesn’t ever feel normal to stay 6-feet apart from our neighbors and that we won’t go the rest of our live without hugging non-family members. Alas here we are... temperatures are taken as a greeting, hand sanitizer is dispensed at every turn, and masks have become as regular an accessory as glasses.

Wearing masks is no doubt saving lives, even if the great mask debate (or what John Oliver hears it as) is bringing drama to our country. The introduction of this new accessory also brings my kind of drama: an organizing challenge. As these masks have become ubiquitous, it is time they get their own homes.

Whether you have one mask that you wash and rewear or keep a variety around in different spots, it’s a good idea to have a system for them, as they’re not going away any time soon.

Options for storing masks:

IN THE HOME

You want the masks to be easily accessible and grabbable as you walk out the door. Two easy options:

A basket by the front door:

These baskets sit on the entry table of our home. A tray of hand sanitizers and glasses, a basket of sunscreens, and now what I like to call a “masket.”

Hang them on hooks:

Since it’s summer and your coat hooks (if you have them) are probably available, you can use them to hang masks. One hook per family member.

IN THE CAR

Contain the masks in a bin or bag if you have some for the whole family. If you’re flying solo, hang it on the rearview mirror or on your gear shift, so you’ll always know where it is.

BONUS: some cool masks

Shout out to some of the masks I like (and that you see in photos here):

  • Caeli Mask: cutest, most expensive and thickest (with filters), so it feels like it’s actually doing something

  • Swimspot: least expensive, most comfortable, probably least effective because it feels like you’re wearing a tissue on your face

  • Caraa: cute, comfortable and comes with filters

Please do everyone a favor and please keep wearing those masks!
